Promote Fan Games, or Shut Them Down?

By LUDWIG VON KOOPA - Take my ideological business strategy for what it's worth.

Congratulations: Your company is a creative success, and your intellectual property has the respect and admiration of the masses. Your fanbase is expressing their love of your works by creating derivative works based off of yours and allowing others to access those. Yes, it's copyright infringement, but should you encourage it as a business strategy to keep your fans engaged without you having to lift a finger, or are your creative expressions at risk for a devaluation? Or... do you just ignore them?

A KoopaTV reader requested that I write about which approach is best when it comes to fan games:

I researched a bit on Sonic Mania and it seems to be a promoted fan game by Sega. A very different approach to Nintendo shutting down fan games. Would a comparison of these two approaches make a good article?”

Well, it's up to you guys if this will make a good article, but sure, I'll compare SEGA (and companies like SEGA) and Nintendo's approaches towards fan games, and give you a recommendation. Since I've been on multiple sides of the issue over the years, I'll compare criteria so you can decide for yourself what is appropriate for your business.
